“The Red Cross is my husband,” Falensa Samo sings after receiving her kit of essential household items including blankets, buckets, jerry cans, sleeping mats and pots. Falensa, who hails from Kunkwe in the district of Maringue, is one of the thousands to receive assistance. She opened her package with a short song, expressing her joy.

A member of the Mozambican Red Cross assists an elderly woman in carrying the kit of essential household items. The partnership between the ICRC and the Mozambican Red Cross is vital in reaching the vulnerable people who were displaced by armed violence and helping them rebuild their lives.

A thumbs up from the Jemusse family after receiving assistance. The Jemusse family lives in Gravata in the district of Maringue. They are one of the thousands trying to rebuild their lives. While much more is needed, these household goods will go a long way in restoring the independence of the families that have returned home to little or nothing.

Engaging with the community is an essential part of the ICRC's work. With the help of the Mozambican Red Cross, the ICRC is able to communicate its work as well as promote the principles and humanitarian values of the organization.

Despite having lost so much due to armed violence, they smile. Community members in the district of Maringue listening to the messages delivered by the ICRC and Mozambican Red Cross during the distribution.

The International Committee of the Red Cross is working with the Mozambican Red Cross to distribute essential household items to 40,000 people in the district of Maringue in central Mozambique.

These are the faces behind the numbers, the fathers, mothers and children who fled their homes during armed violence.
