When Nang Anm Phat was a child, she tripped and fell in her family’s farm in their remote village. The injury caused her severe pain and her family tried to treat her with herbal remedies and roots.

Though the herbal treatment continued for a while Nang Anm Phat’s condition didn’t improve. When the pain became unbearable, her parents took her to a hospital, where they received the unexpected news that she needed to undergo a leg amputation.

Nang Anm Phat shares that life had been different for her before the amputation. She enjoyed the freedom of doing whatever she wanted to do without any physical constraints. However, after the accident she had to rely on her parents a lot, especially for tasks that required physical effort.

In 2021, Nang Anm Phat's life took a positive turn when she learned about the physical rehabilitation centre in Kyaing Tong, supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). At the centre, she found a community of people who had faced physical challenges like her.

Since then, the ICRC has provided her with training and cash grants to start a small livestock business. Now, she is raising two piglets and plans to continue this venture for a sustainable source of income that will take her closer towards her dream.

The ICRC continues to support individuals like Nang Anm Phat in their journey towards a better life, building a society where people with disabilities can participate fully and live with dignity.

Sixteen-year-old Nang Anm Phat from Pr Mork village in Kyaing Tong Township has a dream – to become a nurse someday. An injury in her childhood that led to an amputation has added many challenges to her life, but it has not made her stand down. As she talks about her future, she presents a picture of resilience and hope.
