Away from the questioning looks of naysayers, 22 differently-abled athletes are training hard at the Hpa-An Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Centre. Their goal is to win laurels at the ASEAN Para Games scheduled for May 2020 in the Philippines.
Supported by the ICRC, the centre at Hpa-An opened in 2003 mainly to support victims of landmines. Today, it serves the community around Hpa-An, Bago and Kayin. For over 20 years, the ICRC has worked in close partnership with the Myanmar Red Cross and the Ministry of Health to provide technical and financial support to physical rehabilitation programmes in Myanmar. The ICRC also runs these programmes at centres in Kyaing Tong and Myitkyina with the Ministry of Health and Sports.
Besides physical therapy, we also support people with disabilities play a fuller role in the society by helping them set up small businesses, gain vocational training and participate in sporting events.
