In 2016, the ICRC continued to help the people of Somalia affected by 35 years of armed conflict and harsh climatic conditions like droughts and floods.

We provided aid in the form of health care, clean water and economic support. Our teams also visited people in detention to monitor their living conditions and promoted compliance with international humanitarian law (IHL).

Highlights of our work in Somalia in 2016

100,000 people benefitted from cash relief, cash for work, and cash grants.
11,000 detainees received food and other essentials including toothpaste and clothing.
Supported 4 hospitals which treated 5,000 weapon-wounded people.
800 army officers became sensitized to IHL through education sessions.
380,000 people received food and household items.
