United States of America: 65,000 names registered on website for Hurricane Katrina victims

05-09-2005 News Release 05/69

By the morning of Monday 5 September Geneva time, the Red Cross webpage for victims of Hurricane Katrina had registered over 65,000 names.

The page ( , English and French) enables people affected by the disaster to re-establish contact with family and friends. It was set up by the ICRC in cooperation with the American Red Cross.

People in the disaster area can register on the webpage to let family and friends know that they are safe and provide their current contact details, while those looking for loved ones in the disaster area can check the list for information. They can also register the names of family members and friends, encouraging them to get in touch.

This service is open to everyone. However, neither the ICRC nor the American Red Cross nor any other Red Cross or Red Crescent Society is in a position to verify the accuracy of the information posted on the webpage, nor can they be held responsible for the way third parties make use of this information. The ICRC and the American Red Cross therefore urge everyone to use this service responsibly, in good faith and strictly in accordance with its humanitarian objective.

People who have re-established contact with their family members or friends and therefore wish their names to be removed from the list should follow the instructions provided on the webpage.

At the request of the American Red Cross, the ICRC is also deploying several experienced family tracing and logistics experts to the USA to support humanitarian operations in the disaster area. The ICRC has offered the American Red Cross additional help if and when needed.
