The ICRC and the Zimbabwe Red Cross hold workshop for police officers

03-06-2005 News Release

The following was issued as a press release by the ICRC's regional delegation in Harare.

The ICRC and the Gweru and Bulawayo branches of the Zimbabwe Red Cross have conducted separate one-day workshops in order to familiarise around 130 police officers of the Zimbabwe Red Cross with the Movement's humanitarian role and activities.

The one-day workshops took place on the 10 and 12 May in Gweru and Bulawayo respectively. The participants in both workshops were officers drawn from all the districts of the two provinces.

There were over 70 participants in Gweru (Midlands Province) and over 60 in Bulawayo. Those taking part were senior and middle-ranking police officers.

The topics discussed included the ICRC's mandate and activities worldwide and in the Southern African Region as well as elements of humanitarian law and human rights law. A significant subject of the workshop was ICRC detention activities: the legal base, the modalities and the various stages of a detention visit. The Zimbabwe Red Cross presented its various activities on behalf of the most vulnerable, such as those affected by HIV/AIDS.
