Australia: New technologies and warfare - the challenges for IHL

The ICRC Australia Mission together with the Australian Centre for Military and Security Law launched New Technologies and Warfare, the latest edition of the International Review of the Red Cross (IRRC), with a special panel event in Canberra last month.

Chaired by Dr Helen Durham, from the editorial board of the IRRC, the timely discussion brought together legal experts, including three review authors from Australia, to put the spotlight on the potential legal, ethical and humanitarian implications of changes to weapons technology.  ICRC’s visiting legal division head Knut Doermann was joined on the panel by the director of the Australian Military Law Centre, Group Captain Ian Henderson, ANU College of Law senior lecturer Dr Hitoshi Nasu and Australian Red Cross international humanitarian law officer Eve Massingham. 

The panel delivered a wide-ranging and thought-provoking discussion on new technologies and the associated challenges for international humanitarian law, focusing on autonomous robots, non-lethal weapons, nanotechnologies and the current conduct of weapon reviews.
