Violence against the wounded and the sick, against health-care facilities and personnel, is one of the most crucial yet overlooked humanitarian issues of today. In conflicts and upheavals all over the world, violence disrupts health-care services at the moment when they are needed most. Combatants and civilians die of injuries that they ought to survive because they are prevented from receiving the timely medical assistance to which they have a right.

Violence against health care must end. Led by the International Committee of the Red Cross, and supported by the European Commission, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement runs a global campaign aiming to improve security and delivery of impartial and efficient health care in armed conflict and other emergencies.

To raise awareness of Health Care in Danger, the European Commission Directorate-General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO) and the International Committee of the Red Cross organise a photo exhibition on “Health Care in Danger: an issue of our times”. The exhibition is composed of pairs of rare photographs, each telling similar stories although coming from very different places and times in history. The exhibition is hosted in the European Union Parliament Information Office (www.europarl.be) on the Place de Luxembourg, Brussels, from October 7th to October 17th.
