Nicaragua and Costa Rica: awareness programme

24-01-2003

ICRC community-based mine/unexploded ordnance awareness programme

The ICRC has been supporting the Nicaraguan Red Cross in implementing mine-awareness activities since 1998. A child-to-child approach was developed in schools in the central and northern parts of the country and it is now planned to train one teacher and one child per school in affected areas.

The ICRC has also funded two ambulances which the Nicaraguan Red Cross places at the disposal of Ministry of Defence mine-clearance teams, and has provided the Costa Rica Red Cross with one ambulance in support of demining teams.
