Geneva(ICRC) – Jakob Kellenberger, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has arrived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he will hold talks with His Majesty King Fahed Bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud, His Royal Highness Prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud (Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Commander of the National Guard), His Royal Highness Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud (Second Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence and Aviation and General Inspector), His Royal Highness Prince Saud Al-Faisal Al-Saud (Minister of Foreign Affairs), His Royal Highness Prince Salman Bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud (Governor of Riyadh), and with Dr Abdul Rahman Al Swailem, President of the Saudi Arabian Red Crescent Society.

Mr Kellenberger arrived in Saudi Arabia from Kuwait where, between 3 and 5 October, he had met with Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior), Jassem Al-Khorafi (Speaker of the National Assembly), Sheikh Mohammad Al-Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah (Minister of Foreign Affairs) and Sheikh Salem Al-Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah (Chairman of the National Committee for Missing Persons and Prisoner of War Affairs).

The ICRC President's visit illustrates the importance the organization attaches to its relationship with Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and its desire to develop and enhance dialogue and cooperation with the countries of this region. The humanitarian situation in the Middle East is a major topic of the talks with leaders in both countries. Mr Kellenberger visited Iraq in May 2003, and is planning further visits to countries in the region early next year.
