Solomon Islands: Boosting prison farming capacity

30-03-2004 News Release 04/47

The ICRC's mission in the Solomon Islands recently distributed vegetable seed, fertilizers and weed killer to the Solomon Islands Prison Service for use by detainees in the country's low-security Tetere Prison farm.

Prior to the tensions on the archipelago that lasted from 1999 to 2003, the Tetere farm had been the main provider of fresh food to the prison service. However, during the troubles it was abandoned and fell into decay. As a result of the recent restructuring of the prison service, work was carried out to restore the prison's farming capabilities so that it could once again contribute to the prisoners’ well-being.

The items provided by the ICRC will be used to grow food to improve the diet of those held at the country's Central Prison at Rove, in Honiara. Any surplus produce will be donated to Honiara's National Referral Hospital.
