Progress on cases of persons missing after 1990-91 Gulf War

Geneva (ICRC) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) today hosted the 27th meeting of the Tripartite Commission set up to ascertain the fate of persons missing in connection with the 1990-1991 Gulf War. The ICRC has chaired both the Tripartite Commission and its Technical Sub-Committee since they were created in 1991 and 1994 respectively.
Today’s meeting, at the ICRC’s Geneva headquarters, was attended by representatives of the Commission members: Iraq, Kuwait, France, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The Commission took formal note of the progress made since it last met in December 2003: a total of 188 cases were resolved in that period. This achievement has significantly reduced the number of families waiting in anguish for answers regarding loved ones now missing for over 13 years.
Working under the mandate assigned to it by international humanitarian law, the ICRC will continue facilitating this process intended to end a long period of painful uncertainty.
