Laos: ICRC vice-president completes visit

Geneva (ICRC) – The vice-president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Jacques Forster, today completed a visit to Vientiane where he held a number of meetings with the Lao authorities.

Mr Forster met with the president of the National Assembly and honorary president of the Lao Red Cross, Samane Vingnaket, the deputy prime minister and minister for foreign affairs, Somsavat Lengsavad, the Standing Committee member and chairman of the Foreign Relations Commission of the National Assembly, Saysomphone Phomvihane, and the minister of public security, Thongban Sengaphone.

During the visit, the Lao translation of the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols, recently completed by the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Lao Red Cross and with ICRC support, was presented to the vice-president.

Mr Forster also met with the Lao Red Cross leadership. Discussions centred on the ICRC’s traditional support for efforts to promote international humanitarian law and on an increase in its support for Lao Red Cross assistance programmes for vulnerable population groups in the country.
