Niger: ICRC aids Agadez flood victims

08-09-2009 News Release 09/180

Niamey (ICRC) – Since 6 September the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Red Cross Society of Niger have been helping families affected by the flooding and destruction that occurred on 1 September when the seasonal river that crosses the city of Agadez burst its banks.

Unusually heavy rainfall provoked the rupture of a dyke, resulting in the destruction of livestock, crops and several thousand houses.

The emergency aid made available by the ICRC and distributed by Niger Red Cross volunteers consists of tarpaulins, sleeping mats, jerrycans, blankets, soap and kitchen sets for 600 affected homes.

The ICRC runs its activities in Niger through a mission in Niamey and an office in Agadez. It is boosting the capacity of the Niger Red Cross to bring aid to the people who need it most.
