19-02-2008 News Release 08/29

Geneva/Ljubljana (ICRC) – The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Jakob Kellenberger, is in Ljubljana for talks with senior government officials and representatives of the Slovenian Red Cross. Slovenia currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU).

Mr Kellenberger will meet with Slovenian President Danilo Türk and State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Andrej   Šter.

Their talks will focus on issues of humanitarian concern to both the ICRC and the Slovenian EU presidency, including the plight of children caught up in armed conflicts around the world. " I'm very pleased to see that this issue is high on Slovenia's list of humanitarian priorities for its presidency, " said Mr Kellenberger.

The ICRC reunites children and families separated by conflict and strives to prevent recruitment of children by armed groups. The ICRC also visits detained minors and supports the right of children to go to school.
