Senegal: prison staff attend seminar

Dakar (ICRC) – The ICRC regional delegation in Dakar (Senegal) and the Senegalese ministry of justice are running a seminar from 2 to 4 November on detainee rights and on prison hygiene and health.
The seminar will be attended by administrative and nursing staff from Senegalese prisons, while the seminar leaders are specialists drawn from the ICRC and the prison department.
As delegation head Sophie Orr explains, "This seminar is part of our ongoing work with the justice ministry, aimed at boosting the knowledge of prison service staff regarding treatment and conditions of detention. It's also an opportunity for an exchange of experience and best practice between the participants and the experts from the ICRC."
The ICRC has been working in Senegal since 1991, and its Dakar regional delegation also covers Cap Verde, Gambia and Guinea-Bissau.
All over the world, the ICRC visits people detained in connection with armed conflict and other situations of violence, assessing their conditions of attention with the aim of ensuring respect for life and dignity. In 2009, ICRC delegates visited half a million detainees in 74 countries, and those countries included Senegal and Guinea-Bissau.
