Fiji: Workshop for senior officers on the law in armed conflict

The Fiji armed forces send close to 300 soldiers abroad every year on peacekeeping missions. Fiji has a 3,500-strong army and has been involved in peacekeeping operations since 1978. Last week, the ICRC's regional delegation in the Pacific facilitated an advanced Law of Armed Conflict workshop for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) in Fiji’s capital Suva. Twenty-four participants attended the workshop, including army, police and corrections officers, as well as NGO and Fiji Red Cross Society staff. The ICRC's armed forces delegate Larry Maybee presented the participants with a mix of lectures and case studies on the application of the Law of Armed Conflict and other international laws in times of conflict and other emergencies.
