Key Points

From January to December 2013, the ICRC:

  • conducted extensive livestock anti-parasite treatment that treated more than 2,300,000 animals, benefiting more than 360,000 people in four Eritrean regions – Gash Barka, Debub, Southern and Northern Red Sea;
  • completed installations of three new solar-powered water systems in three villages of Gash Barka; the project will benefit 17,000 people;
  • enabled around 24,000 people in villages in Gash Barka, Southern Red Sea and Debub to have access to potable water through maintenance work;
  • increased many households’ capacity to produce food by distributing 75 foot-pumps and vegetable seed to 1,500 people in the regions of Anseba and Debub;
  • provided palm mats useful in improving shelter for around 6,000 displaced people, after they were resettled in new villages in the Southern Red Sea region following the eruption of a volcano;
  • constructed two ponds for livestock in Gash Barka to solve the water shortage;
  • is assisting Ethiopian minorities to renew or obtain their residence permit by extending financial support;
  • increased knowledge of IHL among more than 3,000 members of the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students.
