An overview of Islam and International Humanitarian Law (IHL) ICRC webinar with The Islamic College

In times of war, religious leaders can play a vital role in strengthening respect for human dignity, especially in times of protracted conflicts and polarization. International Humanitarian Law (IHL), and its underlying principles, are solidly and deeply rooted and confirmed in Islam. With armed conflicts taking place in so many parts of the Muslim world, the Islamic law of war is as indispensable as ever for the protection of civilians and other persons hors de combat. Dr Ahmed Al-Dawoody, ICRC legal advisor recently participated in a webinar with the staff and students at The Islamic College, a London-based academic institution specialising in Islamic studies.

In his presentation Dr Al-Dawoody gave an overview of IHL and Islam, including the origins, sources, characteristics and principles of Islamic Law of War.
