Peru: The humanizing power of poetry for dignity and social integration

10 October 2017

Reading and writing poetry is a real source of motivation for people deprived of their liberty. Virgen de Fátima women's prison in Lima was one of the venues of the city's Fourth International Poetry Festival. Poets from Malta, Morocco, the Netherlands, Norway and Peru gave a poetry recital and took part in the awards ceremony for the poetry competition organized by the prison.

From the ICRC's perspective, the educational and cultural activities revolving around poetry have had a positive impact on the inmates and are a valuable way to promote their social reintegration.
