The International Committee of the Red Cross played the role of neutral intermediary in a handover operation in March 2017 that saw the release of 125 detainees, most of them from the Sudanese Armed Forces.
Amongst them was Al-Bironey Babeker Ahmed who was held for four years by the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North before finally being released. Al Bironey speaks about his experience as a detainee and the overwhelming emotions he felt when he was set free.
