Sudan: The Ministry of Interior and ICRC promote international humanitarian law and international human rights law

Khartoum (ICRC) – On 11 May, the Ministry of Interior and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) signed a memorandum of understanding to support the Ministry in training police forces in international humanitarian law and international human rights law. The ICRC will work with the police in updating its training curriculum, and will carry out training of trainers' modules.

Police Lt General Dr Elhadi Magzoub, Head of Training Authority at the Ministry of Interior, pledged the full support of his office to ensure that the memorandum is implemented in a spirit of cooperation and mutual understanding between the two institutions. While Kedir Omar, ICRC Head of Delegation in Khartoum, stressed that this would strengthen the partnership with the Ministry, and ensure further respect for the law. The memorandum of understanding is valid for an initial period of three years, at the end of which it may be renewed.

The ICRC also has a similar memorandum of understanding with the Sudan Armed Forces for promoting international humanitarian law.

The ICRC has been working in Sudan since 1978, providing humanitarian aid to people affected by armed conflict, and promoting knowledge of international humanitarian law.
