Surviving landmines: Edisson's road to recovery

20 June 2014

15 years after the international convention banning landmines came into force, these weapons continue to exact a terrible human toll. In Myanmar alone, there were more than 3,000 landmine casualties between 1999 and 2012. One of them was 24-year-old Edisson, who lost his leg in an explosion that nearly killed him. In this short film he explains his tough journey to recovery, left without a job and feeling abandoned by his friends. With a new artificial leg fitted at the Myanmar Red Cross centre in Hpa-An, Edisson can now walk, work and even go swimming again.
