On 7 December 1995, the Members of the 26th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent gathered in Geneva where they adopted resolution 1, mandating the ICRC to "strengthen its capacity to provide advisory services to States, with their consent, in their efforts to implement and disseminate IHL". The Advisory Service on International Humanitarian Law was born.
Exactly 25 years later, and one year after the adoption of the resolution "Bringing IHL Home" at the 33rd International Conference in December 2019, we take some time to reflect on - and celebrate - the work of the Advisory Service. In this webinar, an expert panel will share their perspectives on the achievements of the Advisory Service so far: drawing on lessons learned from the last quarter of a century, as well as looking at the future challenges that lay ahead.
Speakers will discuss:
- The role of the Advisory Service and examples of collaboration between the Service and its primary beneficiaries;
- Perspectives on the added value of collaborating with the Advisory Service;
- Raising the profile of the "Bringing IHL Home" resolution and its implementation;
- Taking a moment to thank ICRC staff past and present, and States that have partnered with the Advisory Service, for their contribution towards promoting the advancement of domestic implementation of IHL;
- Sharing and promoting Advisory Service resources.
