Sana’a (ICRC) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), with Sa’ada New Remand Prison authorities, inaugurated today a new medical clinic aimed at improving the delivery of health care services for detainees in this facility.

“By supporting the establishment of a functional and well-equipped health facility, the ICRC helps ensure detainees have access to the essential medical care they need, preventing chronic health deterioration and disease outbreaks,” said Christine Cipolla, Head of ICRC Delegation in Yemen.

The new facility will provide detainees with timely, adequate, and dignified access to healthcare. It is expected to benefit all the detainees living in this prison.

The creation of this medical clinic is part of the ICRC’s broader humanitarian efforts to support the Yemeni penitentiary system and to ensure that detainees have access to essential services, in accordance with national and international standards.

The New Remand Prison currently hosts a large number of detainees, including migrants, many have complex health needs. Some suffer from long-term illnesses or past conflict-related injuries.

The ICRC has been working for decades in Yemen in places of detention to ensure proper treatment and living conditions of people deprived of their freedom in relation to the armed conflict. It works with authorities to address protection issues, and to improve detainees' living conditions. This involves regular dialogue with the authorities, capacity building and support for health programs in some facilities and projects to improve prison infrastructures.
