Even after a conflict ends, landmines and other explosive remnants of war continue to kill and maim, block access to essential services and hinder reconciliation processes. This deadly problem has a name: weapon contamination. This booklet provides an overview of the ICRC’s multi-disciplinary approach to protecting civilians from the effects of weapon contamination and assisting communities and authorities. It describes our role, expertise and activities, in terms of assessing the risks, mitigating the dangers, promoting safe behaviour and fostering respect for the law.
