Haiti

The ICRC’s work in Haiti is concentrated in the greater Port-au-Prince area. Our humanitarian action is focused on meeting people’s needs in places that have been devastated by armed violence.

Our work in Haiti

Through our neutral, impartial and independent action, we promote compliance with international laws and humanitarian principles to ensure that people affected by armed violence have access to essential services such as water, shelter and health care. We also engage in bilateral, confidential dialogue with all parties to achieve that goal.

The ICRC works to alleviate human suffering as a result of armed violence. We provide support to the authorities to incorporate international humanitarian law into domestic legislation and help the authorities and other groups to abide by that body of law.

We work hand in hand with the Haitian National Red Cross Society, other National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to bring a coordinated humanitarian response to the armed violence and long-standing humanitarian crisis in Haiti, on behalf of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Our action in 2024

2,6 millions

of litres of drinking water were provided to more than 55,000 people affected by armed violence in the Cité-Soleil, Delmas and Tabarre.

600

people from communities heavily impacted by the armed violence (including weapon bearers and 250 women) were trained in basic first aid to equip them to stabilize wounded people before evacuating them to medical facilities for further care.

2,500

households (about 12,500 people) who had had to flee their homes because of the violence benefitted from the distribution of +2,000 hygiene kits, +2,000 tarpaulins and some 3,000 solar lights.

650

members of the national police, the armed forces and the Multinational Security Support Mission to Haiti received training on the principles of international human rights law, international norms and standards for law enforcement operations and guidelines for protecting people affected by armed violence.

102

members of the public and the medical community attended awareness-raising sessions on sexual violence to deepen their understanding and facilitate information-sharing and referrals of cases to the ICRC.

Our work with the Haitian National Red Cross Society

In light of the continuing violence, the regional delegation in Panama has been coordinating with other members of the Movement to help the Haitian Red Cross build its capacities, for example, in the areas of health care and disaster-preparedness and response, which is particularly important in the earthquake-prone south of the country. The ICRC draws on its expertise in humanitarian diplomacy to negotiate with armed actors in gang-controlled neighbourhoods to help ensure the Haitian Red Cross has access to communities affected by the violence.
