Kenya

The ICRC has been present in Kenya since 1973, and the regional delegation undertakes humanitarian activities in Kenya, Djibouti and Tanzania. It hosts the Somalia delegation, a humanitarian hub supporting the wider African region and the Logistics Support Centre, one of the largest ICRC logistics facilities.

After 25 years of separation, Natabo has been reunited with her family in Lokichogio.

Our work in Kenya

The delegation works to promote international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law (IHRL) and assist states in implementing IHL obligations to prevent and limit human suffering during armed conflict and other situations of violence.

In Kenya, we work with the Kenya Red Cross Society to help families separated by armed conflict, other situations of violence, arrest and detention, natural disasters or migration re-establish and/or maintain contact. The people we help include refugees, asylum seekers, migrants and foreign inmates in places of detention.

We work with the prison authorities to promote appropriate and humane conditions for all people deprived of their liberty to ensure their physical and mental wellbeing. This includes ensuring that they receive adequate health care, that they are protected against any form of physical or psychological abuse, in accordance with national and/or international standards, and that they are able to establish and maintain contact with their families.

Other regions we support: Our work in Tanzania and Djibouti is supported by our regional delegation in Nairobi.
