Accession to the Protocols by the Republic of South Africa

The Republic of South Africa acceded on 21 November 1995 to the Protocols additional to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949 and relating to the Protection of Victims of International Armed Conflicts (Protocol I) and NonInternational Armed Conflicts (Protocol II), adopted in Geneva on 8 June 1977.
Pursuant to their provisions, the Protocols will come into force for the Republic of South Africa on 21 May 1996.
This accession brings to 142 the number of States party to Protocol I and to 133 those party to Protocol II.
