Egypt: ICRC holds seminar on IHL and Islam

Academics, Islamic clerics and the ICRC are currently meeting in Cairo to discuss the relationship between international humanitarian law and Islam. Topics include humanitarian principles and Islam, how Islam and IHL view the protection of civilians, plus the protection of prisoners, medics and aid workers during conflict.

The ICRC maintains regular contact with academic, governmental, and non-governmental sectors of the Palestinian community, and this seminar will boost the participants' knowledge of how IHL, humanitarian work and Islam relate to one another. Speakers include Ameur Zamali and Husam Shakhsheer from the ICRC, and participants will be presenting a number of papers.
The seminar will end on 13 December 2011 and has brought together 15 academics, preachers and religious leaders from the Gaza Strip.
