Museum employee Luisa Uluilakeba admires a photo taken in the Philippines by James Nachtwey. A child is playing in front of its family’s temporary home – an evacuation centre on the island of Mindanao. Some people took shelter in schools and public buildings, while others had to make do with even more rudimentary lodgings – sometimes just a cardboard box.

The ICRC and the Fiji Red Cross Society hosted the Our World at War photo exhibition at the Fiji Museum from 21 July to 21 August 2009. The exhibition marked the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Solferino, the 90th anniversary of the founding of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the 60th anniversary of the 1949 Geneva Conventions.

Also as part of the Our World. Your Move. campaign marking these historical events, the ICRC published a book entitled Under the protection of the palm: wars of dignity in the Pacific . This publication shows how, over the centuries, the peoples of Oceania developed practices and rituals to protect women, children, captured warriors and food reserves in time of war.
