Purpose of the post

Support and contribute to ICRC detention actions by:

  • summarizing and organizing knowledge and information available to ICRC staff active in detention
  • enhancing institutional ability to share interesting practices, conduct lessons learned exercises and build efficient detention actions on operational memory and experience
  • From April 2013, be the focal point for issues related to migrants in detention

Your task

As a member of the Detention Unit (OP/PROT/DET), the holder of the post:

Contributes to the Detention Tool Box project and to the preparation and publication of the Detention Manual (end of 2013):

  • drafts and reviews written contributions
  • contribute to the design and implementation of up-dating mechanisms;

At the end of the Detention Tool Box project (mid 2013), ensure regular review of the Tool Box:

  • drafts, requests and coordinates revisions or additional contributions;

Functions as a focal point for detention knowledge management within the DET Unit team and Protection Division, and, as necessary, the broader Detention team and management (including colleagues of other units / departments):

  • Collects and summarizes interesting operational detention practices and examples
  • Designs, organises and animates the necessary tools and events (from collaborative IT tools, VTC to workshops) to enhance detention knowledge building, storing, sharing and use, in consultation with heads of sectors and accordance with the overall Protection Unit  information and knowledge management framework

As of April 2013, functions as focal point for migrants in detention issues, in close coordination with other Protection Unit:

  • follows operations related to migration detention, provide guidance at field and HQ level and contribute to the promotion of good practices

Selection requirements

  • Masters synthesis and summary writing
  • Excellent command of written English, Arabic / Spanish an asset
  • Strong interest in detention issues
  • Good knowledge of ICRC policies and operations in the field of detention

Your profile

  • Strong capacity to work within a team and in a transversal / trans-divisional manner
  • Masters collecting, selecting, organizing and sharing knowledge and interesting practices
  • Capacity to work independently
  • For reasons related to the institution's working procedures, in particular its principle of neutrality, ICRC personnel cannot be nationals or originate from the countries to which they are assigned.

Minimum length of assignment: 18 months (extendable)
