Myanmar: Daw Aung San Suu Kyi visits ICRC delegation
20-06-2002 News Release 02/25
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the co-founder and leader of the National League for Democracy who was recently released from house arrest, paid a visit to the ICRC delegation in Yangon on 17 June.
During her three-hour visit, Ms Suu Kyi had talks with the head of delegation, who reviewed the humanitarian activities currently being carried out there. She was familiar with the ICRC's protection activities and its standard working procedures, and besides posing many constructive questions on the subject had concrete comments and suggestions to offer.
When she expressed her own gratitude and that of her party for the ICRC's humanitarian activities in Myanmar, her words were graced with her famous smile.
With the support of the authorities, the ICRC has since May 1999 conducted regular visits to people deprived of their freedom in Myanmar. It has also carried out prosthetic/orthotic programmes for the disabled — for the victims of mine accidents in particular — since 1986.
