07-04-2003 News Release 03/25

Geneva (ICRC) – On 6 April the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) repatriated 10 Central African prisoners of war from Chad, where they had been held.

They were handed over to the authorities in the Central African capital, Bangui, on their arrival at the airport.

The prisoners were part of a group of 11 soldiers belonging to the Central African forces who had been released on 3 April by the Chadian authorities and placed in the care of the ICRC in N'Djamena, the capital of Chad.

One of the prisoners, a Chadian national, is being treated and will return to his village in the south of the country as soon as he is well. In accordance with the Geneva Conventions, the ICRC had visited the 11 prisoners on a regular basis since their capture in August 2002.
