Afghanistan: Responding to the Dehrawud tragedy
04-07-2002 News Release 02/27
As soon as news broke of the bombing incident in the southern Afghan district of Dehrawud, the ICRC swung into action, providing local authorities with enough burn dressings, medicines and other emergency items to treat 100 people.
The ICRC-supported Mir Wais hospital in Kandahar (the closest sizeable medical facility) has admitted 14 victims – mostly women and children – three of whom remain in serious condition. A number of others have received outpatient care at the hospital.
The ICRC office in Kandahar is waiting for further information from Afghan authorities on the scene and will adapt its response accordingly by sending additional supplies and/or staff.
