ICRC president attends Islamic Summit Conference

17-10-2003 News Release 03/68

Geneva / Kuala Lumpur (ICRC) – On 16 and 17 October, the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Jakob Kellenberger, attended the 10th session of the Islamic Summit Conference being held in Putrajaya, Malaysia.

Mr Kellenberger's presence at the Conference emphasized the importance of relations between the ICRC and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), which share a number of common concerns. In 1994 the two organizations signed a cooperation agreement aimed at fostering consultation and the exchange of information.

A special report on the ICRC's activities in OIC member States was distributed at the Conference. The report , available on the ICRC's website, shows that those activities account for 50 per cent of the organization's 2003 operational budget.

During his stay in Malaysia, Mr Kellenberger also had bilateral meetings with President Megawati Sukarnoputri of Indonesia, President Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir of Sudan and Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi.
