Colombia: FARC hands over last captured geologist to ICRC

23-08-2007 News Release 07/16

On 22 August 2007, the FARC-EP handed over the last of the nine geologists from the Compañía de Servicios Logísticos de Medellín held since 13 March to delegates of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the rural north-west of the department of Antioquia.

This was in addition to the eight geologists already handed over to the ICRC on 28 March and 2 May 2007.

The ICRC wishes to highlight the role played by a Colombian airborne health service, the Programa Aéreo de Salud de Antioquia, which provided a helicopter, as it had for the previous operations.

The ICRC became involved in the release at the request of the FARC-EP.

The ICRC reiterates its readiness to help find mechanisms that will bring about the release of the remaining hostages, together with those members of the armed forces and the police who are still detained in connection with the armed conflict.
