22-07-2010 News Release 10/134
Panama City (ICRC) – Juan Carlos Varela Rodríguez, Panama's vice-president and foreign minister, and Karl Mattli, who heads the regional delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for Mexico, Central America and Cuba, today signed an agreement to establish an ICRC office in Panama.
The accord signed at foreign ministry headquarters in Panama City formalizes the cooperation between Panama and the ICRC that had already been taking place for many years, and will boost the work of Panama's national committee for the implementation of international humanitarian law.
The ICRC office in Panama will be responsible for coordinating activities with other components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in Latin America, including the Red Cross Society of Panama, with which the ICRC endeavours to spread knowledge of international humanitarian law, restore and maintain family links, promote community health and carry out other humanitarian activities.
The ICRC intends to set up a logistics and supply centre in the region in order to be able to respond promptly to emergencies requiring humanitarian aid.For further information, please contact:
