Ethiopia: Evacuation of 161 people from Mekelle, Tigray to Semera, Afar
On Monday, 28 September, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Ethiopia transferred altogether 161 persons out of conflict-affected Tigray, acting as a neutral and independent intermediary, based on the request and approval of all authorities concerned.
Amongst the evacuees were Ethiopian Federal Police personnel and family members, Ethiopian Airlines staff and family members, Civil Aviation Security personnel, African Union (AU) monitors and Ethiopian Red Cross Society members.
They were transported from Mekelle in Tigray to Semera in the Afar region by buses marked with the Red Cross emblem and accompanied by ICRC staff.
The ICRC will continue to engage with parties to the conflict and stay ready whenever vulnerable people are concerned and all parties agree to such operations in the future.
