Forensics science plays an increasingly important role in humanitarian action. The ICRC provides advice, support, and training to local authorites and forensic practitioners in searching for, recovering, analyzing, identifying, and managing large numbers of unidentified remains in varying states of preservation.
Forensics is not just about those who are deceased, it is about bringing important information to those who are alive, and waiting. During a training session with body search and recovery teams in Ukraine, Maria Dolores Morcillo Mendes, ICRC forensic expert, explains why taking care of the deceased is so crucial and at the heart of the ICRC's work.
