The ICRC is no longer operating in Niger. By note verbale dated 31 January 2025, the Niger Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanded the closure of the offices of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the immediate departure of our expatriate staff.

While complying with this decision in full and liquidating our property and obligations in the country, we have been actively seeking dialogue with the authorities, in particular to understand the reasons for their decision and provide any necessary clarification. Our efforts have so far been unsuccessful.

We regret the Nigerien authorities’ decision but remain open to a resumption of dialogue, with a view to continuing our essential humanitarian work for people in need.

The ICRC had been carrying out this kind of work in Niger for the last 35 years. In 2024, we conducted operations in the regions of Diffa, Tahoua and Tillabéry, and in the city of Agadez, assisting over two million people affected by the consequences of the armed conflict, food insecurity and climate shocks.
