This brochure is designed to acquaint the general audience with the red cross, red crescent and red crystal emblems, and to emphasize the importance of respecting them.
It explains the protective function of the emblems when displayed during armed conflict, as well as their use in peacetime by members of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
It also describes how the emblems, which have their origin in international humanitarian law, came into being.
