Kyiv (ICRC) - For millions of people in Ukraine, this year has been horrific. Entire communities live under constant threat, spending tense days and sleepless nights in shelters, across Ukraine. Last night was no exception, with at least 20 people reportedly killed and dozens injured.
“I have been working in Ukraine for a year, and the recent spate of attacks is the worst I’ve seen. We are seeing people’s homes destroyed. We are seeing families losing loved ones and civilians carrying the enormous psychological burden of living under repeated attacks,” said Juan Pedro Schaerer, ICRC head of delegation in Ukraine.
Under international humanitarian law, parties to the conflict must take constant care to spare the civilian population from the impact of hostilities. Frequent attacks compound the strain on civilians and the infrastructure they rely on, deepening the humanitarian consequences of this armed conflict.
