Profiles of the six ICRC staff killed in Chechnya

At 4 a.m. on 17 December 1996, a group of armed men murdered six of our colleagues at the ICRC field hospital in Novye Atagi, Chechnya, as they slept in their quarters. We remember them here.
Date of birth: 31.01.1941 (aged 56). Previously worked for Norwegian field hospital, Bosnia. Arrived in Chechnya in November. | Born in 1947 (aged 49). Many previous ICRC missions. Came to Chechnya in August as part of the first team to arrive in Novyi Atagi, to set the hospital up. | ||

Date of birth: 06.10.1945 (aged 51). From Vancouver, Canada. Three previous ICRC missions: Ethiopia (1990), Kuwait (1991) and Belgrade (1995). Arrived in Chechnya in September for six months. | Date of birth: 06.12.1956 (aged 40). From Wellingon, New Zealand. Joined the ICRC in 1989 (as head nurse in Thailand). Then worked in Kabul and again in Thailand. Arrived in Chechnya in November for six months. |
