Iraq / Saudi Arabia: Remains of Iraqi serviceman repatriated under ICRC auspices

Geneva (ICRC) – The mortal remains of an Iraqi serviceman who died following an incident on the border between Iraq and Saudi Arabia that took place on 23 May 2001 were repatriated on 26 June under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The operation, which took place at the border post of Judaidat between the two countries, was carried out with the full cooperation of the Iraqi and Saudi Arabian authorities.

The Saudi government had asked the ICRC to act as a neutral intermediary in returning the remains to the Iraqi authorities. In order to facilitate the repatriation, the ICRC made representations to the authorities in Baghdad and Riyadh.
