    When Israel occupied the Golan Heights during the 1967 war, tens of thousands of Syrians left the territory, but a few thousand remained and found themselves cut off from their country, friends and families.

    Syrian families who live in the occupied Golan have been unable to meet regularly since 1992. It has become an important humanitarian activity for the ICRC to facilitate crossings of people and goods between the Golan Heights and Syria proper, and to enable the Syrian-Golanese population to keep in touch with their families on both sides of the UN-controlled demilitarized zone.  

  • Family members meet again after 14 years’ separation. They are close relatives, as the bridal couple are cousins. The cousins cannot meet regularly, since family visits between Golanese Druze and their relatives in Syria proper stopped in 1992. They last saw each other in Jordan.

  • Mounjed Abu Awad and Mayada Aboud met in Damascus 10 years ago, at university.They agreed to marry in 2006 but had to wait until 3 November 2011, when the knot was tied at Kuneitra crossing. Mounjed's relatives said he was about to give up, and move to Syria, but finally, with the help of the ICRC, the couple were united.
