Azerbaijan: Celebrating 75 Years of the Geneva Conventions and promoting IHL

Marking the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in partnership with the Ombudsman Office of Azerbaijan, on December 20, brought together influential people and organizations to discuss the domestic implementation of international humanitarian law (IHL).

Representatives from state authorities, IHL practitioners and members of the academia gathered to explore pressing issues and share insights on promoting humanitarian law in Azerbaijan. The event served as a platform to reflect on the lasting importance of the Geneva Conventions and the challenges of adapting IHL to contemporary armed conflicts.

The ICRC’s latest report on IHL and the challenges of contemporary armed conflicts was presented, leading to discussions on the evolving nature of warfare and the importance of strengthening legal frameworks to protect those affected by conflict.

Through insightful interaction and discussions, the event underscored the shared commitment to upholding the principles of humanity, even in the face of modern challenges.
