Earthquakes in Venezuela: one month later, resilience and solidarity prevail

One month after the earthquakes in Venezuela, the tireless efforts of rescue teams, ordinary citizens, and Red Cross volunteers who rallied to support the hardest-hit communities remain an example of dedication and solidarity that continues to inspire people in Venezuela and around the world.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) recognizes and appreciates the tireless efforts of those who, from the very beginning, dedicated themselves to searching for and rescuing survivors, and immediately provided them with medicine, food, shelter, a hug and words of encouragement.

Despite the challenges involved in search and identification efforts after a disaster of this magnitude, the dedication of rescue teams and authorities has made it possible for hundreds of families to bid a dignified farewell to their deceased loved ones. Those who are still searching for answers deserve support and a long-term commitment to help them cope with the uncertainty and the financial and emotional hardships they are facing in this difficult situation. Behind every action, no matter how small, lies a profound act of humanity and solidarity.

The humanitarian consequences of the earthquakes are devastating and will require long-term efforts at multiple levels to support the region’s recovery and help its people return to a sense of normalcy. The ICRC reaffirms its commitment to continue its presence on the ground to support all those affected by this emergency, under the leadership of the Venezuelan Red Cross and in collaboration with the other components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

At the field hospital set up by the Venezuelan Red Cross at the Jorge Luis García Carneiro Stadium in La Guaira, primary health care, first aid, and psychological support are provided every day to people affected by the earthquakes. The volunteers have poured their heart, soul and humanity into supporting those who have lost everything. Since 25 June, thousands of people have received support and assistance.

To support this hospital and other health-care facilities, the ICRC has donated 10 tonnes of medical supplies and medicines to care for those in need. In addition, the hospital and the rescue workers’ camp were provided with access to drinking water and showers, while electricity was supplied to ensure the hospital could continue operating effectively.

Hearing the voices of the people you love restores hope and brings comfort to the heart. Together with the Venezuelan Red Cross, we have set up fixed and mobile connectivity points in various areas of La Guaira so that those affected can communicate with their loved ones, recharge their devices, and connect to Wi-Fi. More than 3,200 connectivity services have been provided to date.

The humanitarian response to the aftermath of earthquakes goes beyond saving lives. Those who have sadly lost their lives deserve to be recovered and returned to their loved ones so they can be given a dignified farewell. To contribute to this effort, we are sharing a series of recommendations with civil protection and firefighting teams on the recovery, handling and proper registration of bodies.

Over the past month, we have donated more than 70,000 forensic supplies to the National Service of Medicine and Forensic Sciences (SENAMECF) and other organisations.

In Ciudad Caribia, La Guaira, together with the Venezuelan Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, we provided support to 130 families by distributing personal hygiene kits, blankets, cleaning kits, buckets, water containers and 1,000-litre water tanks. Such assistance helps improve the living conditions and preserve the dignity of those who lost their homes as a result of this tragedy.

Those who are helping today have also suffered the consequences of the earthquakes. They have lost family members and friends, and in many cases, their homes and belongings were damaged or lost. Even so, their solidarity has been remarkable and has not wavered. However, taking care of mental health is vital in order to continue helping others. The psychosocial support provided by the Venezuelan Red Cross has already reached nearly 200 people, including first-response teams.

The humanitarian consequences and challenges arising from this complex humanitarian situation will continue to unfold in the coming months. The International Committee of the Red Cross, in accordance with its mandate and in support of the work of the Venezuelan Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, will continue to provide support in the areas of forensic services, mental health and psychosocial support, livelihoods recovery and sanitation systems to help those whose lives changed in a matter of seconds.
