Sudan: Chinese engineer released
27-03-2004 News Release 04/24
Khartoum/Geneva (ICRC) – On 26 March, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) facilitated the release of a Chinese engineer held by a Darfur rebel group.
He was one of two Chinese workers detained by the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) in Southern Darfur since 14 March. The second managed to escape a week ago. The ICRC acted in the release in its capacity as a neutral intermediary and with the full agreement of all the parties concerned.
Li Aijung was handed over to the ICRC in the vicinity of Nyala, the capital of Southern Darfur. He then was flown out on board of an ICRC aircraft. Once in Khartoum, Mr Li was placed in the care of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese embassy.
