Bolivia: Seminar/workshop on journalism, armed conflict and internal disturbances
01-10-2004 News Release 04/115
An ICRC-run seminar and workshop on journalism, armed conflict and internal disturbance brought 18 journalists from various parts of Bolivia to Corioco (La Paz) on 25 and 26 September.
The speakers at the seminar were a communication specialist and professor at the Catholic University of Bolivia, the director of Bolivia’s observatory on security and democracy and a journalist from the Brazilian daily Folha de S. Paulo.
Topics included press coverage of internal disturbances, the humanitarian activities of the Bolivian Red Cross and the work of the various bodies that make up the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Participants also discussed the role of the press during Bolivia’s internal disturbances in 2003.
Journalists from radio (including community stations), TV and the press had an opportunity to exchange experiences and views on their work during the events of last year.
One conclusion of the seminar was that journalists’ responsibilities when covering violations of humanitarian norms require them to expand their knowledge of international humanitarian law and of human rights.
